Covid-19 has accelerated internet data consumption

As if we didn’t see this coming – but not this fast. Data consumption was already growing by 40% a year. But in 2020, it actually doubled to 85,000 Pbytes according to the latest figures from OpenReach and Virgin Media.

And it’s still not that much data compared to what’s coming. The same article cites a figure of average household consumption of 9 gigabits a day. That’s just 1 megabit every 9.6 seconds.

We are going to need a lot of fibre to deliver always on 2 ways video conferencing at high definition so people can work adequately from home.
